Matthew Smith: the photographer behind the photographs

Matthew spends his days making other people’s buildings look their best. His own story was harder to see.

Architectural photography is a crowded field. Clients compare portfolios, and the portfolios start to look alike. What sets one photographer apart is the person: how they see a space, how they work on site, how they make a client feel.

So we turned the camera round. I followed Matthew on location at Old Swiss, the former Swiss Laundry site on Cherry Hinton Road in Cambridge, as he photographed the landscape design amongst the new buildings. The result is a set of portraits and behind-the-scenes images and video that show the craft and care behind his work, so clients choose him for who he is, not just what he shoots.

Rajen provided me with BTS footage on a shoot, and a portrait/headshot session to help me to improve my positioning and show the person behind my work.

His service was fantastic, he took time to understand my needs, suggested lots of ideas and the end results were superb. Really pleased with the portraits and footage he captured, it was a pleasure working with him!
